Here is what one congress critter has to say about HR 3200. Mmmmm looks like a good bit of info... but then I guess providing a link for everyone to read would not be good enough for some people. but really if you already have an opinion and believe that the government "is here to help" the I feel sorry for your somewhat limited world view. I mean all you have to do is look at how well the manage the post office, how well the keep social security funded and how well they did with such programs such as "cash for clunkers" and you know how well they will do with health care. Oh just an aside.... did you know the $1.36 out of every $2.00 of the cash for clunkers plan went to overhead? If it had been a charity it would have been called a scam! Dont believe me look it up.

Anyway here is the link to lexisnexis..... have a good read!
corporate.lexisnexis.com/news/corporate-counsel,compliance/cat200001_doc1029241403.html

I dare you to become informed from the source... not the idiot box..... I dare you to actually think for yourself for once instead of letting some talking head or puffed up propagandist think for you. Most people wont take me up on it because its to much like work. it will cut into their free time and they think that what they are told by the mass media is the truth. Well little sheep.... when the government comes around to fleece you Don't say no one told you. Don't say that you were not warned.

So whats so scary?
how about these examples I'll use standard English so that you can understand what is written in the above document......

Page 16: States that if you have insurance at the time of the bill becoming law and change, you will be required to take a similar plan.
STEM CELLS DOING SOMETHING USEFULL!!!!

Please note that the stemcells used were the mans own and not some emryonic cells. (They still have not figured out how to use them though they try to say they hav greater benefit. Still they have produced nothing)

MELBOURNE, April 18, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A man's vision has been restored by a corneal patch grown from adult stem cells by a team at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and the Bernard O'Brien Institute of Microsurgery (BOBIM).

The patch, which replicates the cornea, was cultivated from a single stem cell from a donor eye and was transplanted to the surface of the man's eyes.

The research team was led by Dr Mark Daniell (CERA) and Dr Erik Thompson (BOBIM).

The process, known as a limbal stem cell transplant, is thought to be the first of its kind in Australia. The Melbourne success significantly advances international research in limbal stem cell transplantation in the eyes.

The patient had severe vision loss caused by stem cell failure on the surface of the eye, causing scarring and a vascularised and opaque appearance.

"He had reduced mobility, could not read and could not work, but he has now resumed duties as an accountant, enjoys sight (slightly lower than normal 20/20 acuity) and has increased mobility and quality of life and renewed optimism," Dr Daniell reports.

He says the surface of the man's eyes was removed and the patch (about 50mm long and a micron thick) was applied and is healing well. "This technique can now assist people with alkaline burns who have damage to the surface of their eyes."

Dr Daniell and his team are now working toward developing a totally bio-engineered cornea, using a stem cell extracted from elsewhere on a person's body other than the eye.

Ganked form here: http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007/apr/07041803.html

DAMN!!!!
Global Warming VS Climate Change.

Taken from here

Global Warming vs. Climate Change

If you pay close attention, you'll find that Global Warming alarmists are not actually saying "Global Warming" lately. No, nowadays it's "Climate Change." Do you know why?

Because for the past three years, global temperatures have been falling.

Oops.

The thing is, we've had twenty years since the Alarmists first raised the banner of Global Warming. They told us that "If This Goes On" by 2010 or 2020, sea levels will be rising so high that coastal cities will be flooded, famines will cover the earth, and ...

Oh, you know the list. They're still making the same predictions -- they just move the dates farther back.

It's like those millennarian religious cults in the 1800s. Religious leaders would arise who would predict the Second Coming of Christ in 1838. When Christ didn't oblige them by showing up, they went back to their visions or scripture calculations or whatever they claimed and report that they miscalculated, now it was going to be 1843. Or whatever.

Here's the raw truth:

All the computer models are wrong. They have not only failed to predict the future, they can't even predict that past.

That is, when you run their software with the data from, say, the 1970s or 1980s, and project what should happen in the 1990s or 2000s, they project results that have absolutely nothing to do with the known climate data for those decades.

Because the "solutions" proposed by the alarmists do not solve anything -- and they admit it! The drastic proscriptions of the Kyoto Protocols, even if anybody were actually following them, would not have had any effect on Global Warming, even if it had been caused by human CO2 emissions.

Do you understand that? When Al Gore goes on and on about what we must do to save the Earth, he knows -- and everybody involved with the Global Warming alarmist movement knows -- that none of their drastic proposals would have the slightest effect on Global Warming even if it worked they way their fantasies say it does.

So why do they propose it? There are many personal motives, of course, but when you look at the non-solution "solutions" they propose, the pattern is clear: They are not trying to stop global warming. They are trying to punish the Western democracies for being richer than the rest of the world.

There are solutions to that problem (and I believe it is a problem), but they involve stabilizing bad governments, increasing international trade, and making unsafe parts of the world safer so they can take part in the global boom.

Not only that, but many of the programs the alarmists advocate are actually needed for completely unrelated reasons. It is a mark of our folly and blindness that we continue to be so ridiculously oil-dependent all these years after the oil embargo of 1973.

For national security, environmental, futuristic, and personal-happiness reasons we should be working hard to change our automobile centered culture into more civilized patterns that invariably make people happier wherever they are tried.

It can't be done by cutting back on automobile emissions or even by raising taxes on gasoline -- especially because these changes are hardest on the poor and the marginal middle class.

Oh and if you leave a comment please be good enough to do so while signed in. Annon posts will be deleted have the courage to stand behind your convictions. If you don't have the courage you are hardly worth the time to answer.

Here are 40 Reasons to Ban Guns:

1. Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, Detroit & Chicago cops need guns.

2. Washington DC's low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis' high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control.

3. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are "just statistics."

4. The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible for the decrease in violent crime rates, which have been declining since 1991.

5. We must get rid of guns because a deranged lunatic may go on a shooting spree at any time and anyone who would own a gun out of fear of such a lunatic is paranoid.

6. The more helpless you are the safer you are from criminals.

7. An intruder will be incapacitated by tear gas or oven spray, but if shot with a .357 Magnum will get angry and kill you.

8. A woman raped and strangled is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.

9. When confronted by violent criminals, you should "put up no defense - give them what they want, or run" (Handgun Control Inc. Chairman Pete Shields, Guns Don't Die - People Do, 1981, p. 125).

10. The New England Journal of Medicine is filled with expert advice about guns; just like Guns & Ammo has some excellent treatises on heart surgery.

11. One should consult an automotive engineer for safer seat belts, a civil engineer for a better bridge, a surgeon for internal medicine, a computer programmer for hard drive problems, and Sarah Brady for firearms expertise.

12. The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917.

13. The National Guard, federally funded, with bases on federal land, using federally-owned weapons, vehicles, buildings and uniforms, punishing trespassers under federal law, is a "state" militia.

14. These phrases: "right of the people peaceably to assemble," "right of the people to be secure in their homes," "enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people," and "The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people" all refer to individuals, but "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" refers to the state.

15. "The Constitution is strong and will never change." But we should ban and seize all guns thereby violating the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Amendments to that Constitution.

16. Rifles and handguns aren't necessary to national defense! Of course, the army has hundreds of thousands of them.

17. Private citizens shouldn't have handguns, because they aren't "military weapons'', but private citizens shouldn't have "assault rifles'', because they are military weapons.

18. In spite of waiting periods, background checks, fingerprinting, government forms, etc., guns today are too readily available, which is responsible for recent school shootings. In the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's, anyone could buy guns at hardware stores, army surplus stores, gas stations, variety stores, Sears mail order, no waiting, no background check, no fingerprints, no government forms and there were no school shootings.

19. The NRA's attempt to run a "don't touch" campaign about kids handling guns is propaganda, but the anti-gun lobby's attempt to run a "don't touch" campaign is responsible social activity.

20. Guns are so complex that special training is necessary to use them properly, and so simple to use that they make murder easy.

21. A handgun, with up to 4 controls, is far too complex for the typical adult to learn to use, as opposed to an automobile that only has 20.

22. Women are just as intelligent and capable as men but a woman with a gun is "an accident waiting to happen" and gun makers' advertisements aimed at women are "preying on their fears."

23. Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering butchers but revert to normal when the weapon is removed.

24. Guns cause violence, which is why there are so many mass killings at gun shows.

25. A majority of the population supports gun control, just like a majority of the population supported owning slaves.

26. Any self-loading small arm can legitimately be considered to be a "weapon of mass destruction" or an "assault weapon."

27. Most people can't be trusted, so we should have laws against guns, which most people will abide by because they can be trusted.

28. The right of Internet pornographers to exist cannot be questioned because it is constitutionally protected by the Bill of Rights, but the use of handguns for self defense is not really protected by the Bill of Rights.

29. Free speech entitles one to own newspapers, transmitters, computers, and typewriters, but self- defense only justifies bare hands.

30. The ACLU is good because it uncompromisingly defends certain parts of the Constitution, and the NRA is bad, because it defends other parts of the Constitution.

31. Charlton Heston, a movie actor as president of the NRA is a cheap lunatic who should be ignored, but Michael Douglas, a movie actor as a representative of Handgun Control, Inc. is an ambassador for peace who is entitled to an audience at the UN arms control summit.

32. Police operate with backup within groups, which is why they need larger capacity pistol magazines than do "civilians" who must face criminals alone and therefore need less ammunition.

33. We should ban "Saturday Night Specials" and other inexpensive guns because it's not fair that poor people have access to guns too.

34. Police officers have some special Jedi-like mastery over handguns that private citizens can never hope to obtain.

35. Private citizens don't need a gun for self- protection because the police are there to protect them even though the Supreme Court says the police are not responsible for their protection.

36. Citizens don't need to carry a gun for personal protection but police chiefs, who are desk-bound administrators who work in a building filled with cops, need a gun.

37. "Assault weapons" have no purpose other than to kill large numbers of people. The police need assault weapons. You do not.

38. When Microsoft pressures its distributors to give Microsoft preferential promotion, that's bad; but when the Federal government pressures cities to buy guns only from Smith & Wesson, that's good.

39. Trigger locks do not interfere with the ability to use a gun for defensive purposes, which is why you see police officers with one on their duty weapon.

40. Handgun Control, Inc., says they want to "keep guns out of the wrong hands." Guess what? You have the wrong hands.

A gathering of Eagles

The following is taken from Here

How many times have you sat in front of the television over the last four years, watching anti-war activists march on Washington, chase the ROTC off your local college campus, vandalize war memorials, insult the troops and wreak havoc under the surrender banner?
How many times have you thought to yourself: What can I do?

Here is the answer: Get off the sofa and join the Gathering of Eagles on March 17 in Washington, D.C. On that day, well-funded, celebrity-studded anti-war groups plan to march to the Pentagon on a protest route that will take them past the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and climax in calls for immediate withdrawal of our troops from Iraq, destruction of America’s “global military machine,” shutdown of the enemy combatant detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay and impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney (plus an end to “colonial occupation” in “Palestine, Haiti and everywhere” for good measure).

Last time the left-wing, peace-loving fun bunch came to town, their minions gone wild threw rocks at a military recruitment office in D.C’s Dupont Circle neighborhood and at a local Fox News van, broke through a Capitol Hill police security cordon, spray painted the Capitol Grounds with impunity, desecrated the Lone Sailor statue that stands watch at the U.S. Navy Memorial and reportedly spat at disabled Iraq war veteran Josh Sparling as he voiced his support for his fellow troops.

There were tens of thousands of anti-war demonstrators at that event last month. You know how many showed up with Sparling to counter the far left? Forty.

Now, imagine our troops getting word of that count. They’re walking the talk, committed to the long, hard mission of counterinsurgency in Iraq and abroad, risking life and limb — and only 40 of their fellow Americans bothered to represent them in the nation’s capital?
The Gathering of Eagles, an impromptu coalition of veterans’ groups, pro-military organizations and Internet activists, wants to right the wrong. “We are a non-violent, non-confrontational group. We look to defend, not attack. Our focus is guarding our memorials and their grounds,” they explain. “We believe in and would give our lives for the precious freedoms found in our Constitution. We believe that our freedom of speech is one of the greatest things our country espouses, and we absolutely hold that any American citizen has the right to express his or her approval or disapproval with any policy, law or action of our nation and her government in a peaceful manner as afforded by the laws of our land.”
What the Eagles will not stand for, however, are “violence, vandalism, physical or verbal assaults on our veterans, and the destruction or desecration of our memorials. By defending and honoring these sacred places, we defend and honor those whose blood gave all of us the right to speak as freely as our minds think.”

Sgt. Artie Muller, founder of Rolling Thunder, the POW/MIA advocacy group, has called on his 80-plus chartered chapters to turn out. Move America Forward, a grassroots, nonprofit, pro-military charity, is launching a caravan from California March 8 to join the Eagles and will bring flags from across the country for the event. The Nam Knights will be there, too. Bill Devereaux, a member of the South Jersey Viet Nam Vets Association, wrote to tell me he had “appropriated a bus on which 40 of our members will be attending the event.”

Daniel McPeters, an Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veteran, emailed that “at least a dozen of my brothers will be attending this vigil of necessity and representing those not able to be present. This has needed to happen for 30-plus years. Anyone that supports our troops and their cause should try to make it out, or contact their local Veterans post and spread the word. The silent ones need not be silent any more.”

Cindy Sheehan has responded to the Eagles by deriding them on the Gold Star Families for Peace web site as “Rightest [sic] America Haters” who are “brainwashed and propagandized.”
The question isn’t, “What can I do to respond to the Sheehanistas?” The question now is, “What will you do?”

Get off the darned sofa and show your support. Find out more at www.gatheringofeagles.org.

Michelle Malkin is a political columnist and blogger whose web site, www.michellemalkin.com, has been ranked one of the best political blogs in the country by both Forbes and The Week magazines.
A Whiff of Grapeshot Pt III

    <lj:music>Blue Man Gruop.</lj:music>

Yup its been a while and this has been sitting mostly written for the past month. Real Life has a way of intruding and making things difficult.

“Talk to me Rue. Tell me what you have cooked up you are like the child who got to the cookie tin.” Celest was making it hard not to give in. The way she felt against me as we walked out of the debriefing was very distracting.

“Look Cel we can’t talk here and I really want to get repaired, polished up, cleaned and groomed before I get home. I would like to suggest that you might consider it as well as we may have guests when we get back to the Manor.” I grinned wickedly and finished, “and no amount of wheedling will pry any more out of me.”

“Guests? You realize of course that I can call my father and have him tell me who is there right?” Celestan grinned. “I could and should too, just to erase that annoying smirk.”

I chuckled, “Go right ahead my dear. I have already talked to Lord Greycoat, I am sure that he will tell you exactly what you need to know over an unsecured circuit.”

Celest gapped at me, “You subverted my father? How could you? You evil, nasty, wicked creature.” Sighing she said, “I guess I will just have to wait then. But you are right you need to get prettied up so that our cubs don’t look at you in horror. I may as well do the same. I mean it wouldn’t do for a Greycoat to accept guests in anything less than high fashion. And that means you to husband mine, I think we will need to go shopping before we get home… hmmmmm”

Something in the way she said that last bit filled me with dread.

Later that evening as we headed toward the estate I groused, “Why do I have to be dressed up in this ridiculous get up? I mean really I look like some arrogant highbrow peer of the realm. This just isn’t me. You on the other hand my love are a thing of sheer beauty. Goddess I missed you.” It was then that everything that had happened dumped on me. All the emotions that I had managed to set aside to deal with later chose then to demand dealing with. I lost my voice and felt... so helpless I guess. For the first time in my life, I had some thing to loose. I stared out the window fighting back the wave of emotions for the first time in months. I couldn’t seem to throttle them back. There is a term for it, posttraumatic stress I think. The narrow escapes, the death that followed me, the whole lousy operation and all its attendant emotions played through my minds eye on fast-forward. Fortunately, Cel was busy ignoring me so she never saw the tears falling from my one good eye. As we drew closer to the estate I finally got a handle on my emotions and throttled them back, I knew I would have to deal with them this evening and I hoped that Cel would understand, but right now duty called.

“So are you done giving me the silent treatment Cel?” I asked.

She responded, “Only if you are finished withholding information. You were angry with Admiral Blake for doing it to you why should I not be angry at you in turn?”

Sighing I replied “Can’t I even plan a surprise for you? I mean really there is a world of difference between planning an enjoyable surprise and almost being killed. The two really are not related.”

“Oh…” Celest whispered, “I am so sorry Rue. I am not really dealing well with all this. I didn’t think that I would be this scared. You left on that mission and I had reconciled myself to having to wait for you. I never thought about just how dangerous what you do is. It never really occurred to me that you might not make it back. I…”

“Shhhhh… there now my lady love. Don’t think that you are alone in that. I had no idea how dangerous this assignment would be either.” I said. “Only I did make it back and I will not be leaving again for a long time. We have to get people recruited and trained now. I am going to be underpaw a whole lot from now on and that was the last obligation before we could start on this. So, if you please I will tell you a little about the surprise. We have guests tonight, and they are not ordinary by any stretch of the imagination. So can we please kiss and make up before we land?”

Celest laughed, “You are incorrigible! Your better at wheedling than your son!” With that, she leaned over and gave me a kiss that promised far more later. I could hardly wait.

Upon Landing at the Estate we were met by our three cubs who came barreling out the door, Lord Greycoat and his lovely wife (I could see where Celest had gotten her looks from), Captain Cliffstalker of the house guard, and a host of staff from the estate. As the cubs came running across the pad, to pounce me I braced myself and laughing scooped them up in my left arm and held them close. This had the benefit of not letting them continue to pounce their mother and keeping them under control. The resultant armload of pups and their squeals of delight as I nuzzled each in turn and tickled them all was chaotic for the moment. Finally Celest said in a stern voice, “Is that how cubs are supposed to behave when there are guests present? I know I have brought you up better and what are you doing out of bed past your bed time?”

I will give them this; my cubs listened to their mother. All three of them squirmed about to look at her with huge eyes and said, “But Mama…” I whispered to them “Mama is right, it’s past your bed time. I love that you stayed up to greet me but tomorrow will be soon enough for play kids.” Putting them down I said to them, “Go on now, I am home safe and you need to be in bed. Tomorrow we can play, now go to Nanny Mrruual and get to sleep I will see you at morning meal.” I kissed them all and sent them scampering away.

“I will never get over the way you are around cubs brother mine.” Chemise hove into view with a regal bearing. “I don’t understand what any cub sees in a contentious, argumentive, pig-headed, stubborn, knuckle dragging lout like you.” With that my sister took three running step and pounced me.

I proceeded to catch her and hold her at arm length. “Why Lady Nightwind, is that any way to act? Think of the example you set for all the cubs. More importantly what would mother and father think to see you pouncing a hideously deformed, horribly altered, monster of flesh and metal.” The last sentence I said bitterly as my parents had been unable to reconcile what I am now with what I was.

I will give them this they did try. So long as they don’t have to see me they can even talk civil to me. Perhaps with time they will even be able to accept me as I am now, perhaps not. But at least they know I did come to protect the family when the need was greatest. They won’t ever forget that, nor will they be able to repay me. I wouldn’t accept it any way. But they do try which is better than it was.

Chemise huffed, “Like I CARE what any one thinks. You are my brother and my friend. Of course I can pounce you. Any way put my down. Its undignified to be hanging in the air like this, and besides Mum and Da are out on the islands enjoying their retirement. They left ME to fix up the family fortunes.”

“And you are more capable than they were, of that there is no doubt in my mind.” I responded gently, setting her down. I looked down at my new clothes and straightened them back up, turned to Cel and offered one elbow to her and the other to Chemise. “I can think of no finer homecoming than escorting the two most gorgeous females in the parsec to dinner.

As we approached Lord and Lady Greycoat I received a formal embrace from both and was told in no uncertain terms never, ever to spring this kind of thing on the family ever again. Apparently I had not given enough notice to Lady Greycoat to properly arrange the household for the reception of such august personages that were even now waiting in the atrium to be introduced to my wife. As we were shepherded toward the atrium I was lectured on proper procedure to notify the estate of incoming guests and how much lead time was expected. Celest was grinning as her mother soundly berated me. I could see Lord Greycoat smiling too. Boy had I screwed up. I swear that woman chewed me out like a professional. Never once raising her voice nor saying anything unladylike but never the less making me feel all of 1 inch high by the time she was finished, which coincided with our arrival just outside the atrium. And with a final sniff of distain Lady Greycoat said, “Please try to act the part of gentleman. You were born into a good family and married our daughter so there must be some redeeming qualities to you. Remember you do not represent your own family but ours as well this evening. Don’t do anything to embarrass us or so help me I will make you life miserable.”

What could I say but “Yes Lady, No Lady, and I shall do my best Lady.” Really those were the only words I could get in. When the party swept into the atrium I noticed that there were quite a few more guests than I had originally planned… A few score more actually. It was actually close to 200 more. It looked like a soiree of the rich and well to do. So much for keeping things small and quiet, I thought. I looked at Lord Greycoat and whispered, “What happened to small and quiet?” Lord Greycoat gave me a significant look then looked at his wife. “She has so few occasions to be a hostess, I couldn’t say no, especially when Viscount Brushtail arrived. Speaking of whom….” He motioned toward the approaching figure.

Many folks know I play computer games. And I have played a ton! But yesterday I picked one up that I just could not stop playing. Vanguard Saga of Heroes. Its a MMORPG and the only other one of them that I have played is World of Warcraft. Side by side there is no comparison. Vanguard wins hands down. Even though it is still buggy I only had 1 crash in a nonstop marathon sesion that lasted 16 hours. Realized WoW in its first week online crashed every hour without fail. Vanguard was released on the 30th of January. Cudoes for Vanguard.
Graphics are outstanding, a huge amount of customization for the races, a Huge number of Races intracate diplomatic interaction... I could go on but I won't.
Suffice to say THIS GAME IS TOP NOTCH. I highly recomend it. And yes its Pay to play but for once I think its worth it.
TTFN.... back to the game!

<lj:music>Pigs on the Wing: Pink Floyd</lj:music>

This is an old file that I came across whilst cleaning out my computer.

I can just hear the good Lt General S.B. Buckner reading this letter aloud with an Old South Georgian accent. And truthfully there is a secret to making the perfect Julip that is not addressed herein. Nor will it be coerced from me. But this comes close enough for Yankees.

What follows is a copy of a letter from Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. USA [Graduate of VMI -1906 and West Point -1908, Killed on Okinawa June 18, 1945] to the Major General Wm. D. Connor, superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

30 March, 1937

My Dear General Conner:

Your letter requesting my formula for mixing mint juleps leaves me in the same position in which Captain Barber found himself when asked how he was able to carve the image of an elephant from a block of wood. He said that, "... it was a simple process consisting merely of whittling off the part that didn't look like an elephant!"

The preparation of the quintessence of gentlemanly beverages can be described only in like terms. A mint julep is not a product of a formula. It is a ceremony and must be performed by a gentleman possessing a true sense of the artistic; a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion. It is a rite that must not be entrusted to a novice, a statistician nor a Yankee! It is a heritage of the Old South; an emblem of hospitality and a vehicle in which noble minds can travel together upon the flower-strewn paths of a happy and congenial thought.

So far as the mere mechanics of the operation are concerned, the procedure, stripped of its ceremonial embellishments, can be described as follows: Go to a spring where cool, crystal-clear water bubbles from under a bank of dew-washed ferns; in a consecrated vessel, dip up a little water at the source. Follow the stream through its banks of green moss and wild flowers until it broadens and trickles through beds of mint growing in aromatic profusion and waving softly in the summer breeze. Gather the sweetest and tenderest shoots and gently carry them home.

Go to the sideboard and select a decanter of Kentucky Bourbon distilled by a master hand, mellowed with age, yet still vigourous and inspiring. An ancestral sugar bowl, a row of silver goblets, some spoons and some ice and you are ready to start.

Into a canvas bag, pound twice as much ice as you think you will need. Make it fine as snow, keep it dry and do not allow it to degenerate into slush. Into each goblet, put a slightly heaping teaspoonful of granulated sugar, barely cover this with spring water and slightly bruise one mint leaf into this, leaving the spoon in the goblet. Then pour elixir from the decanter until the goblets are about one-fourth full. Fill the goblets with snowy ice, sprinkling in a small amount of sugar as you fill. Wipe the outside of the goblets dry, and embellish copiously with mint.

Then comes the delicate and important operation of frosting. By proper manipulation of the spoons, the ingredients are circulated and blended until nature, wishing to take a further hand and add another of its beautiful phenomena, encrusts the whole in a glistening coat of white frost; thus, harmoniously blended by the deft touches of a skilled hand, you have a beverage eminently appropriate for honourable men and beautiful women.

When all is ready, assemble your guests on the porch or in the garden where the aroma of the juleps will rise heavenward and make the birds sing. Propose a worthy toast, raise the goblets to your lips, bury your nose in the mint, inhale a deep breath of its fragrance and sip the nectar of the gods!

Being overcome with thirst, I can write no further.

Sincerely, Lt. Gen. S.B. Buckner, Jr. VMI Class of 1906

A whiff of Grapeshot Pt 2

Yup I am back in the groove again. Chewipaka from the Terinu forums was kind enough to edit part one which I will be updating momentarily. Thanks to here for that. Also since this is a rather long post you are going to have to look behind the cut.

A whiff of Grapeshot PTII

As I walked into the debriefing room, I noticed the plush accommodations. This was unlike all the other debriefing rooms I had ever been in before.
“Damn I can see no expense was spared here. This is very nice.” I said as I walked over to the leather recliner with the jack ports. “Very nice indeed Stan. I hesitate to ask the price tag on all this stuff. I mean recline chairs, this nice meeting table, the overstuffed chairs the display screen…. All of this stuff is top shelf. Where did we get the kind of money for all this opulence?”

Stan laughed and said, “Why not spend the money to be comfortable since this is where we are going to be spending a good portion of our time anyway. If you think this is spectacular, you should see what they are setting up in the joint forces situation center. All this pales in comparison to what is that is going to be. It boggles the imagination as to where this is coming from but evidently word has gotten around to some very highly placed families on Vulpine Prime and most of the “special purpose” funding is being donated charitably by those families. It is amazing the level of support we are receiving for the local inhabitants. We have never seen anything like it on Earth.”

Cellest sniffed loudly and huffed in a very aristocratic voice, “Well Admiral. Not all of the galaxy is as self-serving as humankind. We Vulpines appreciate the sacrifices made by the people in the armed forces. WE acknowledge those sacrifices and WE support those who go out to the front lines to fight EVIL. And make no mistake Admiral the rumors flying around right now are all about the end times.”

She continued in a more subdued voice, “The common people are scared and need to see that their leaders are making every effort to stop the coming of disaster. I suspect that when open recruiting starts in the next few months that we will be inundated with volunteers from all over Vulpine Prime and her colonies. As we sit here today let us also acknowledge that the subtle recruitment we have been doing has been bringing in all manner of cyber enhanced individuals who are eager and willing to show that THEY are worthy of being in the front lines with everyone else. That they are NOT monsters and horrors that so many believe they are. Right now in Ship Landing on the Northern continent, there are over 1000 cybernetics chomping at the bit to apply for training at this facility and join this unit. And they all realize that they may be rejected but it won’t be because they have enhancements. That should speak volumes to the GSA about the discrimination that is rampant against these individuals. What we are building here is more important than any of us realize… what we are building is a foundation for HOPE gentlemen and that is worth more than ANY funds being poured into building this base.”

A pregnant pause followed that speech and the look of shock on the Humans faces was priceless. I took a picture. As I settled into the chair Steve Corrics chimed in, “And there you have it guys. The groundside view of what we are doing. Does anyone else feel like that weight of the galaxy is squarely on their shoulders? Thank you very much Captain Greycoat for enlightening and burdening us at the same time. I now feel totally out of my depth and extremely humbled by the experience.”

“Well,” said Captain Hill, “Now I know that your reputation is well deserved Lady Greycoat. That was motivational in an extreme. I can see why almost everyone on this base respects you or fears you. Those that don’t are fools. I had my doubts to be truthful but as I have come to know and work with you I can see why you were given your commission at your current rank. I am in awe of your capacity to cut through BS and lay out situations as they are. What I don’t understand is how you hooked up with the likes of gunny… excuse me…. Chief Warrant Nightwind. I would love to hear that tale one day when we have time.”

I glared over at the Captain and said, “Well I am sure that you will be apprised of how we met, in all the gory details at some other time Francis. As I recall you did get an invite to the wedding but were too busy to make it. But for now can we concentrate on the task at hand? I have just burst dumped my memory files into the archive and we need to review them and get this over with. I need to repair and then go see my cubs, thank you very much!”

Stan laughed, rolled his eyes heavenward and said, “Oh lord what did I ever do to get saddled with a command team like this? Why have I been cursed to such an existence? Tell me Rue is there anyone on the base you don’t know on a first name basis? I was unaware you even knew Captain Hill. We can get into that afterwards. Lets get down to business shall we? Lets just get the Highlights of this clusterfuck and figure out what we can do to avoid similar problems in the future. Rue you have control of playback so if you would be so kind as to hit the high points and show us the pertinent footage it would be appreciated.”

“My pleasure Stan,” I responded. “As for what we can do in the future to avoid this type of problem my suggestion would be to remove Admiral Blake from any position of authority since it is my considered opinion that he is incapable of being in any kind of leadership position. But that is my opinion.”

“To continue I will fast forward to the rendezvous with Major Nevil-Smythe or as I started calling him, for reasons that will soon become apparent, Major Disaster. To summarize my first encounter with Major Disaster and his band of incompetent minions I found him and the men he lead to be bigoted, speciesist, ignorant, glory hungry, thoughtless, buffoons who were the sorriest excuse for troops anywhere. A transcript of the initial briefing and meeting between myself and the Major is now appearing on your screen and is available for you to hear from your desk units. Needless to say I knew I was hosed from the moment the Major opened his mouth. I now ask you to review the briefing and tell me if I was correct in my future actions.”
I leaned back waiting for the explosion that would come in 4……3…..2….1…

“HE SAID WHAT!?!?!?!?!” Celest screamed.

Yup I was right on with this one, down to the second.

“Why in the Den Mother’s name didn’t you kill him then and there.” Celest rounded on me with the fury of a mountain hunter protecting its young. “You let him get away with insulting you like this? Why?”

“Calm down Captain.” I said. “I have been called worse and insulted far more effectively that that puling pissant was capable of doing. As for why I didn’t kill him, I am sure he was trying to goad me into just such a rash action so that he could “decommission me” permanently. Evidently me, being a CWO, really stuck in his craw. What was worse is that he knew I could have had his rank if I had asked for it, but I had flat out refused to become an “Officer”. At any rate the highlights of this misanthropic adventure are now available for your viewing pleasure. Here are assorted comments and insults as well as outright challenges by Major Disaster and his band of fools. I contended with this for 3 months until we found the objective. I still offered my advice and comments even though I was told he did not want to hear them. I responded that I was here in the capacity of support and ADVICE and I would do my duty even if he would not do his. I suppose I could have been more diplomatic about it, however I feel my attitude was justified."

“If everyone would now look on the screen we are at the part of the mission where things started going south. Quickly. The bungling incompetence of this human and his pack of idiots reminds me of an old “Keystone Cops” movie. Here is where we board the freighter, if you listen to the orders issued you will see the problems start here.”

“This is the first hint of opposition and the first hint that I had that information had been purposely with held from me. I had no idea these lizards might be onboard nor did I know they were susceptible to Sonics. The Major on the other hand did know all this and all his people had sonic grenades except for me. He also did not warn me of them so when they set them off they hit me in the cybernetics as well. At my howl of protest I got this, “Awwwww poor little rover’s ears hurt? Tough it out doggie.”

“It was at this point that the op went sour. Evidently there were far more “scalies” then there was supposed to be and they managed to seal off and separate almost half the men. Then they proceeded to slaughter them. The Major ordered me to set charges at the target points and evacuated leaving me with no covering fire. I set my charges and blew the bulkhead to space and grappled the ship as the coward of a Major was in the process of leaving me. Believe me at this point I would have gleefully killed him but I needed to get on board first. When I finally got onboard the coward had locked himself in his stateroom and refused to come out. And since the survivors were hell bent on fleeing the scene I felt no need to argue.”

“We flew right into an ambush. They disabled the ships engines and at that point I blew the charges I had set up throughout the ship to destroy everything, computers, engineering, sickbay, anything and everything that may have been of use to the enemy. Of course the humans used life boats to abandon ship before I blew everything. They were killed as soon as they fled the ship. My heart bleeds.”
“After blowing the scuttling charges I made my way to where there was supposed to be a Life boat for me. Surprise it had been sabotaged, so I made myself comfortable and armed myself to the teeth. I figured I would kill as many of the scaled bastards as I could. I accounted well for myself, but I didn’t figure they would capture me alive. It took 20 of them to do it and that’s all I remember until I woke up in their version of a sickbay somewhere with them disconnecting my power supply. I knew they had not managed to access any of my memory nor my or data so I was not compromised. I was here that I saw this character.”

The image a horned alien froze on the screen. There was a collective gasp from the gathered officers.
“By all that Holy,” gasped Stan, “Is that a VARN???”
I chuckled mirthlessly, “Oh yes Admiral. That is a Varn. What’s more is that IS the Varn that did it for Earth. That is the face of The Genemage. Now you may ask why this is important. That is quite simple really. By keeping my mouth shut and my ears open, I found out that The Genemage, made these scaly bastards. He and the Varn are what we are going up against, as well as any other critter that this monster has created.

“I can see from your faces that you are wondering just how the Dashing Hero escaped from the foul clutches of the Evil Overlord. Now there in lies a story of true heroism, daring, and tragedy. I’ve always wanted to be in a space opera and if this doesn’t qualify then dye my fur pink.”

“This next sequence occurred after I was tossed into a holding cell.” The scene faded in and three humans were tossed into the holding cell. “Evidently the lizards didn’t think that there was going to be much these three could do for me. The male is one Lance Freeman. He is cousin to the light skinned female Leeza Blake. Yes that Blake. The daughter of Admiral Blake, although how he got so luck as to raise such a wonder is beyond me. If nothing else, I am willing to forgive many of his faults for the sake of his daughter. At this point none of my cybernetics are functional other than what is resident in my skull. I was having a hard time breathing and I was in serious pain. The dark skinned female’s name was Rachael. She was a civilian that had happened to be captured by the Genemage at an earlier time.”

There was an intake of breath from Stovensky, Corrics and Hill. Stan blurted out, “She looks exactly like one of The Three! Rachael Namatjira”

I hid a grin and said, “Yes I do believe that that was her last name… yup sure was. Anyway, it turned out that Leeza was an adept engineer and after I had introduced myself, yes I lied to them about my rank, since I was naked anyway, Leeza reconnected my power and I was operational again. From there it gets rather hairy and there were so many opportunities for things to go south that it was a miracle we made it out of there alive. What followed was enough to age me 100 years, we managed to get out of the cell by the expedient way of ripping the door off, managed to find my small arms and explosives, and Freeman was a demolitions expert. Good man, that, a little on the abrasive side but then in that situation who wouldn’t be.”

I continued on with the debriefing over the exclamations and cries of distress from the others in the room. When they saw the Mantel Cracker and found out what exactly it was there was a stunned silence. I stopped the scene at the rescue of Terinu and Rachel, and said, “The little grey demon child is a Ferin. He is the only one of his kind in the know systems. Something else Admiral Blake failed to mention. Also, for the edification of this august group of personages, he is the ward of Leeza Blake and a walking Power Plant. The boy creates an energy that can be harvested called Bion. Apparently, the Genemage, who would love to get his hook into this boy, manufactured his race to power the Dominion. Unfortunately for him, Terinu has a mind of his own and hates the green bastard. As we escaped the impending explosion of the Mantle Cracker and jetted out of there in a 500 year old shuttle the whole thing went up in a ball of fire.”

“Here are some final facts about this clusterfuck of a mission. Blake sent us to retrieve or kill biological samples that happened to be an attempt to re-breed Ferin by the Genemage. We were not informed of this and I find murder extremely distasteful. Rachel Namatjira died before we could rendezvous with Viscount Brushtail and his yatch. Yes, that’s right That Brushtail. So, does this sound like a space opera in the making or what?”

The stunned silence that answered me was more than enough confirmation. I looked at my wife and saw the look of horror on her face. I was immediately off the couch and by her side. I grabbed her and held her close as she started shaking and saying, “Oh sweet den mother, so close, so many times. You almost died so many times.”

I looked at Stan and said, “There preliminary debrief accomplished. If you look at the star map at the end of the file you will see where that system was. I think Admiral Blake has a lot to answer for. The information that he withheld and may have is need-to-know information for our survival. If he is not forth coming with what he knows Stan, you need to apply some pressure to him. I am not some peon to be lorded over by someone like him. And right now I have to reassure my family that this was not a run of the mill mission and that things like this don’t happen often.”

Stan looked at me and nodded. “One more thing Rue. What happened to Rachel Namatjira’s body?”

I looked at Stan and replied levelly, “We sent it into the star. She deserved better and her willingness to sacrifice herself so that we could get away… that was heroism. I hope she finds what she’s looking for where ever she is now.”
“Come on Celest let go get me fixed up and then I need time with just my family before I jump back into the saddle. I will see you next month Stan. Until then don’t call me or you will regret it. I am worn out and need down time. You can do that for me can’t you?”
Stan nodded and said, “Get out of here. I’ll see you at work next month. Of course I do intend to visit my godcubs but don’t worry it will be purely social. Now go and that’s an order Chief.”

With that I walked out the door with Celest at my side. Life was good.

Dragon: Now talk about a legend. These magnificent creatures are of many species. Some can be as large as the Earth itself, while others are as small as a mouse. One image that comes to everyone's mind is the large, fire breathing Dragons that loathed humans and loved to sleep on massive piles of gold. Not all dragons have a bad reputation. Most dragons are very wise, caring, and protective. It would make a person very lucky indeed to meet a dragon. Especially if they walked away untouched. I admire your wisdom, for you are the Ancient Dragon.

Dragon

100%

Demon

92%

Mermaid

67%

WereWolf

58%

Faerie

42%

Angel

25%

</td>

What Mythological Creature are you?
